Fearless and bold, Spinone Italiano is a retriever and hunter able to conduct its mission in a variety of climatic and environmental conditions. It is very intelligent, sensible and sports-spirited dog, full of energy and experience. In out fields, Spinone Italiano is playful and joyous breed which loves to romp along the ground and willfully enjoy more enthusiastically with its family. It behaves in the same way as if; it is the best human-like friend of you. The poised and calm status of mind and body makes it perfect companion of the family and of children as well. Its response is well enough with other family animals and wants to share the playful activities with all pets. The Spinone Italiano dogs may howl sometimes, however they are classified as quiet dogs.

Versatile hunting and retriever dog, Spinone Italiano is healthy and energetic dog. Its rugged and large body is a deterrence which is further augmented by its long head. The build is well muscled, solid stuff and heavy bone density imparts great power and stamina. Its hanged ears shape in the triangle. The wiry coat of this breed is hard, dense and rough, readily fulfills the weapon-like requirement and opponent is punished if dares to mess, besides the coat is also natural protection against thorny bushes and or severe cold swamp. Solid white, orange or their different combinations are the most common colors of coat, sometimes brown marking also beautify its look. Its gait is gentle, free and alert-sharp, over all expression is watchful, keen and graceful. The expert retriever, Spinone Italiano is also a fabulous swimmer as well.

The Spinone Italiano is one of the oldest Italian breeds of retrievers extensively used by hunters as a Pointer as well as retriever dog during the hunt of flying game birds. The dog proved as reliable and high endurance companion of the hunters, but comparatively the speed was not so high. The breed is assumed to be the result of cross fertilization among Coarse-haired Italian Setters, White Mastiff and may be with French Griffon in the region of Adriatic coast. Truly, the above status is not believed by many contemporaries, however it is undoubtedly accepted that the breed dates centuries back, a dog was seen during Italian Renaissance period, the dog was used as gun hunting dog. The regular development of this breed was started by some volunteer breeders in 1950 for the very first time. Prior to this, the breed was simply called as a retriever or hunting dog, thereafter, the breed was named as Spinone Italiano. The breed was registered and recognized with AKC in 2000. Sharp eyed, Spinone Italiano dogs are excellent hunters and retrievers, meanwhile they are high sensitive, sensible loyal and devoted companion dogs.


An attentive and playful housemate, Spinone Italiano dog is steadfast, serious and bold hunter when in fields. The breed is steady retriever, and can be slower in reaction. They point the quarry correctly and also retrieve accurately but they are not furious to tear out the prey. Indoors, the dog is extremely mild, polite and harmless to its family, children and other pets as well. The dog is happy and joyous when with family and preferably when on any assigned activity. During playtime, the dog enjoys the company of children with taking part in the game. The Spinone Italiano dogs are lively and happy when on work, they amuse the nearby and will get bored when left without work. Furthermore, the dogs are fond of travelling, exploring and searching for new things. They are non aggressive to strangers and remains independent, they tend to get included into friendship quickly. They are not proved as good watchdog due to their frank behavior with strangers, however some possession is there, they can warn against the threat towards its family, this dog is not to be trusted as watchdog or guard dog.

To suit best in your house held environment and harmony among the pets, you need to socialize the dog in its early age. Get its puppy and familiarize with all possible pets in your house. Young puppies mostly become shy or timid of strangers; you need to housetrain the dog to learn good attitudes and temperaments. Rarely this breed is found stubborn, mostly obey the master in positive manner and react reasonably. The breed is low shedder and minimal grooming is required, infect dog is not shy of bathing in ponds and lakes, however the water trail will follow till your house and may extend inside the house. They need moderate exercises, a minimum of 30 minutes’ walk is mandatory to stimulate its mental and physical satisfaction. Apartment life is not ideal for them, as they principally are hunters, an open house with fenced yard would be much appreciated.

Owner Should Know

  1. They are not high jumpers, an average fence is enough to control its movements.
  2. They are lively and energetic, apartment living is not suggested. Open house with fenced yard is suited.
  3. They are not aggressive to strangers and tend to extend friendship; therefore they could not be used as watchdogs.
  4. For daily activities, 3 to 4 rounds of walk around yard or 30 minute of exercise is necessary daily.
  5. Puppies could be timid or shy, socialize them from very early age of puppyhood.
  6. They are generally healthy dogs, however a few cases of Hip dysplasia are on the record.
  7. They need minimum brushing and grooming, they are low shedders as well.
  8. They are quiet dogs and will bark rarely.
  9. Seek for reputed and trustworthy breeders or suppliers to get healthy puppies, ensure puppies are clinically checked and are disease free.
