Rat Terrier


The Rat Terrier breed is not only a fast family companion, as well a very agile playmate. They are sharp lookouts and vigorous hunter, able to grip multiple situations. Ratties are intelligent, trustworthy and talented breed having flexible and versatile applications. Obedient in following the command of the master, they behave alike zealous tenderly with family, gentle with children and harmless to other pets, however they are aloof of strangers and tend to stay aside. This breed is trainable to produce excellent watchdogs. They are primarily family dogs but can be effective equally when applied outdoors.

The dog is well muscled with exemplary balance in strength, bones and flesh. The dog has deep chest, strengthen neck, powerful shoulders and energetic legs able to excel its powers and dominance. Erected ears could be tipped or simply carried upright impressing an attentive guard. By birth the dog has long tail which could be docked in early days or can be left in natural position. The dog is available in different colors and combinations; usually the color coat includes chocolates, sables, red, white, pears tan and black, In addition spotted brindle of blue, red and white colors. The Rat Terrier working dogs have no temperament changes due to their skin color appearances.

The origin of the Rat Terrier is America. They are developed with mixing of many terrier breeds to suit the requirements that time. Mother breed is said to be the Fox Terriers which were cross fertilized with Manchester Terriers and Bull Terriers. The initial application of the Rat Terrier was to stop rabbits from destroying the crops. In 1910, farmers decided to develop some faster dogs to protect the fields from rabbit epidemic. They bred the Rat Terrier and crossed with speedy breed of dogs like Whippets, Italian Greyhounds and Smooth Fox Terriers. The breed is also cross fertilized with Beagles to enhance detection and tracking capabilities by hunters. The breed was popular and in healthy strength during 1920-1930s, breeders with latest technology developed the Rat Terriers in less quantity against the demands, however the Rat Terrier clubs around the world got notice and started breeding in reasonable strength with adequate characteristics currently found in this breed. The Rat Terrier breed is a healthy and easily available because of genetic capability of cross fertilization with a variety of active and living breeds.


The Rat Terrier is cheerful, feisty and lively dog breed developed to entertain the families. Passionate to work around, make fun and keep company laughing are traits of this dog. Families select the Rat Terriers to get rid of vermin and rats from the house. Indoors, the dog behaves quite well with family, soft to children and harmless to other family pets including dogs but after good socialization. They become attached to family and eager to remain within the family circle. They adopt new people in their friendship when accepted by owners. Outdoors, the dog is over-much belligerent to strange dogs and rather suspicious to strange personnel. As they are rat killer, they tend to chase small animals. Adding to above, they can be train to herd some flocks of small animals to little distances. They get along with animals quite well, but this needs early socialization.

Some dogs have exceptional sniffing sense and are able to observe odd smells, sounds and other unidentified environmental changes and will bark to alert the owner when any menace concerning to family is felt. They can accept strangers only after valid acceptance by owner or family members. In some cases the Rat Terrier are observed of growling to its master to achieve dominance, the matter is serious and should immediately be addressed by telling the dog that such behaviour is not acceptable in any case.

The dog may begin tagging territory if other dogs are held in the house, usually it happens when both genders are working in the house and the dogs have not been sterilized. Ensure early infertility of the dog if you are not planning to breed them. Introduce all dogs and other animals you are intended to keep as pet in your home from their puppyhood during socialization.

Owner Should Know

  1. The Rat Terrier is tempted by its chasing and prey drive vigorously and will try to grasp its quarry either by jumping over the fence or digging under the fence. Make your basement of fence and its height adequate to control the mini hunter.
  2. The breed is energetic and lively, it need a handsome amount of daily exercise, more than 40 minutes exercise is mandatory to get rid of its physical and mental stimulation.
  3. The dog is happy when applied on job. If kept without work for longer times would make it destructive in the form of extensive chewing and barking.
  4. The Rat Terrier is not wandering dog to be left off leashed. The dog can go miles away in chase of its interest. Keep in leash or in close-fenced area when you are out of home.
  5. They are curious to strangers and will not allow anyone entering in your house until you show acceptance, you need to greet your guests at the outer edge of yard.
  6. They are gentle and well going with other pets, but the need of socialization is compulsory.
  7. Seek for reputed and trustworthy breeders or supplier to get healthy puppies.
