Old English Sheepdog


The cheerful and naughty, Old English Sheepdog is playful, lively and gentle dog. It is good family mate and passionate entertainer. The breed is ludicrous and acts grotesquely for fun and amusement. It urges to be the part of family and want to remain touched. They remain possessive towards and protective to master, children and guard livestock. The breed is hand shaking and well greeters of strangers, therefore, not ideal watchdog.

The Old English Sheepdog is abundant structured powerful dog with square-proportioned projection. The body of this compact animal is a little broader at rump as compared to shoulders. The top line of the body is lower at withers than the loin, makes the dog distinct. Its gait is easy, ground-covering and powerful with good drive and approach. Its pace is leisurely like bear. Its under coat is water proof and outer coat is shaggy and a little hard. The coat seems profuse, neither curly not straight and is less denser. Tail is of short length. The dog appears intelligent in appearance.

Amongst some interesting stories about Old English Sheepdog, the dog belongs to Poodle and Deerhound breeds whereas, some tinkers say, the breed is descended from Briardand, the Bergamasco, Scotch Bearded Collies and Russian Owtchar breeds which was brought to England. But simply, we can say, the current breed is developed by the farmers of England to herd their sheep flock and guard their cattle to market. The green fields of England were the area of this dog and remained under the use of farmers for long time. In 18th century, the farmers followed a trend of shortening down the tails to get tax exemption announced for working dogs. The dog had good resistance against cold weather and was used as herding dog with reindeers. The dog was formally presented in a dog show in Britain during year of 1873 and got recognition by AKC in 1888. The dog is principally a herding dog and a family guard, however, sometimes can be used as retriever.


The Old English Sheepdog is a tireless working dog and eager to work than to stay idle. They are lively and active indoors as well as outdoors. They usually love to work and enjoy with companion pets, however, they can stay alone in self made business or activity. The breed is actually gentle and caring besides its false popularity as violent, self-sufficient and mistrust.

The dog displays a discipline in it, and wants to put other animal in right order of discipline. They are natural herder and tend to herd the family members and children as well. The dog is not a wandering dog, it pleases to remain inside the family and get involved in the daily household routine works. The breed is intelligent and self confident, it will dominate if the occasion is provided by its mater. Negative obedience or destructive attitude may develop in them when left without governance and command. The treatment of their behavior is suggested in early age. They prove good learner and obey formal instructions, the only requirement is of regulated and planned training from its puppyhood.

The breed remains interested in training enthusiastically and found high affinity for learning new things. The barking sound of the Old English Sheepdog is similar to sound of a cracked bell, thus becomes the vocal distinction of this breed amongst other dog breeds. They are clever and intelligent by bird and can understand the command of their master. Training and socialization is much needed to make the breed useable in house held environments.

  1. Concrete training is suggested to socialize it. The dog is powerful and its high energy level demands a positive control over all activities. To make suitable for house with other pets, introduce with all possible animals during their puppyhood time.
  2. If you expect the dog is clean, then, it is not right dog for you, the Old English Sheepdog are classified as heavy droolers and high shedders, moreover their coat is prone to accept debris of mud, dust and rust, resulting ugly and dirty décor of your home interior.
  3. Herding and guarding jobs need stamina, the element of exercise is not neglect able. They need healthy amount of exercise on regular bases.
  4. The coat is high shedding and grooming is enough costly and time consuming.
  5. They love to stay in family, they need to be involved in all family affairs. Leaving alone would cause separation anxiety to them, they may get destructive.
  6. Seek for reputed and trustworthy breeders or suppliers to get healthy puppies, never buy puppies from irresponsible supplier, make sure, puppies are clinically checked and are disease free.
