The quality and features, this Shepherd possess, had been studied by the breeders and they are interested in descending the dog in size with the same versatility. The original breed is of a medium sized; strongly build dogs which resemble with Australian Shepherd with a great extent. The maximum height after growing at its full would be 18 inches for the standard Miniature Australian Shepherd dog. The second derived breed is named as Toy Australian Shepherd, which heights 14 inches on its maximum growth. The third derived breed is named, quite interesting ‘the Tea Cup’, and is sized smaller would weight of 12 pounds at their full growth. The breeders are still striving to achieve more concise in size to fit in modern day style of life. The dog is preliminarily an athletic dog and is desired to appear strict, sturdy, strong and solid.

In 1968, an association of ‘North American Miniature Australian Shepherd’ was established and started breed preservation and development program. The primary focus was to down size the breed to make it for comfortable for apartment life and modern day style. The breed of original size is being popular in the United States. They are widely used as herding dogs, and favorable family pet, This breed is not still recognized and registered by AKC.


The breed is of tender temperament, free and family loving. They express their love and loyalty towards their owners, remain gentle with family children and harmless to other pets of the house. They naturally are herding dogs and want to herd almost everything. They go well even with cats at home. They are responsive to their duties and will prove the perfect guardians. They love to play with family, remain involved and conductive with each member of family.

The breed is friendly to all, still non-violent to dogs and has very tender behavior. But it does never mean that, they will allow everyone to get into the house. An effectual socialization would make them an impelling watchdog. The sense to detect any odd movement, sound or smell would cause generation of vocal warning. Socialization will dictate the amount of barking required and the command of stop barking is understood or not. They prove easy and handle able during training and quickly get understand. During the ecumenical duty of herding, they incline to remain quiet and will not bark at animals to get them in line. The Miniature Australian Shepherd dogs are eager to remain in family and at work. They get bored when left without work. They also feel some loneliness and would be restless in attitude when placed alone for longer times. They search a prominent place in the house from where; they could easily see the family’s activities. Their behavior with children is playful and you will feel puppy like actions even from matured Miniature Australian Shepherd dog. They are touchy and sometimes sniff the owner’s feet, some could even lay their head onto the feet of owner, the pure expression of loyalty and faith is transparent from their attitude. Daily activity for exercise is not much demanding. Small yard or single round of walk is enough for the mental satisfaction.

  3. Coat maintenance is easy as they do not shed, however, hygienic cleaning and keeping the skin infection free you need to brush quite often.
  4. The breed is well suited for the families who actively participate in trips, picnics and other shows, a little travel will make them happy, you will also enjoy their company in response.
  5. Socialization and housetrain is off course important, you need to spend in money and time both to get desired features in this breed.
  6. It is advised to seek for reputed pet supplier or trusted breeder to buy puppies. Never buy puppies from unknown suppliers. Make sure puppies are clinically checked and disease free.
