The playful toy of a sound family, the Lowchen is excellent family dog. It readily suits to home atmosphere and has passionate love bonding with family. Its tendency is to remain happy and make surrounding people pleased. It has a higher degree of obedience and can willfully entertain its owner by cutely acknowledging and reacting on his commands. As the all other active dogs do, the Lowchen also enjoys digging and barking in its own time.

The Lowchen is a small, rectangle dimensioned dog, a slightly less in height than in length, embraces all joyous feature of house dog. Its build is well muscled, has high bone density with solid appearance. It has a good approach and grasp ability and can jump, dive onto the target. Its pace is remarkable free and stands firm support less. It walks with head held high and waving its tail up proudly. Long and high intense coat is averagely soft and shiny, usually straight, sometimes a little wavy. Its forward projecting part of the head, including its skull, jaw and nose are considerably short. The breed was established in Europe approximately 400 years ago and got the most popularity in Germany. Its name is German phrase which means “a tiny lion". This breed is encouraged not only by breeders for dog lovers, but also, its warm skin hairs were used in the ladies foot wears to keep warmer feet. The breed is mostly liked indoors and became a popular family don in Germany, Spain, Italy and France in the era of 1500s. This breed lived a very healthy time of three hundred years across the Europe till 1800s. The dog lost its strength in numbers and became rare after the World Wars. This breed got registered in Guinness Book of World Record as the rarest breed of the dog in 1960. Attention of dog lover breeders and demanding peoples deprived the breed from the title of rarest breed, however, still rare and hard to found. American Kennel Club has certified and recognized it as a pet in 1996. The dog is well used as a warm family companion in all environments.


The Lowchen is enormous entertainer of the family, has an extreme degree of gentleness and care towards the children. The dog is sensible and can fit in any family. It is daring, sharp and active, loves to play with members of the family and gets involved in house held activities. Lion like appearance of the dog is the most attracting feature. It is of small size and needs to be handled with care by the owner, especially by the children, as they may cause any damage to the dog. They share the house very well with other pets and behave harmlessly with unknown dogs and other animals.

Lowchen is an energetic dog with high dedication towards training and respond very well. They are quick learner as well as responsive. They acknowledge the command of their owner and accept the challenges. They can lead their own the pet association in the house even having bigger dog in house. These dogs are not bite-habited but can bark a lot in response of any intruder getting inside the territory. Pay special attention during training to make them complex free and well socialized, although, by nature these dogs do not afraid of other bigger dogs.

  1. The Lowchen are active dogs but not made for outdoor activities. They please to be inside the family and get involved in.
  2. Neighbor may get angry due its barking, however, socialization is the to teach them when and how much barking is required.
  3. 20 to 30 minutes are quite enough for Lowchen’s activity dose daily, an apartment life is well suited for them.
  4. Brushing is necessary as the grooming is quite rapid, however, the Lowchen does not shed in a general.
  5. Digging is the primary element of active family dog, so train them to make non-destructive.
  6. Don’t make your dog shy or timid with strangers, as in puppyhood many dog breed do so, socialize them to be an effective house mate.
  7. They are family bonded dogs and need continuous connection with family members, they may suffer when left in separation.
  8. Never buy puppies from dummy pet stores, search for reputed and well trusted breeders to get healthy and disease free puppies.
