Overview

The Irish Red and White Setter is a very brave, energetic and courageous breed. They are strong and solid with high stamina. They work outdoor actively and passionately. They are intelligent and attentive hunter, high sensitive detector and active explorer. They remain calm inside the house. They behave gently with children as well as with other animal even dogs. They remain loyal and obedient to their handler. They are eager to be involved in activities and get bored when left workless.

Appearance like an athlete, the Red and White Setter are colorful dogs. Their built is solid, boney and strong muscled. Their coat is a mix of red and white color with lots of combinations; this makes the breed a little dramatic. The coat is long and straight with white base and red lines or spots all over the body including head and face. The red color may be moderate in legs area and on face. In dog shows the horse-like brownish color in not accepted for Red and White Setter breed. The breed is low shedder as compared to standard Irish Setter therefore, they need minimum trimming and grooming.

Initially, Red and White Irish Setter were partly colored in red and white. The setters with very solid red color were a very few. In the era of 1850 the White Setters with solid red patches was attracted the breeders and got popularity. As the time passed on, the Irish Red and White Setter became very rare till 1920. There were only a few dog lovers who kept the dog existed. The preservation and revival of the breed was decided by some breeders which resulted in the existing of Red and White Setter we could see today. To enhance the efforts in making Red and White setter’s breed revived, an Irish Red and White Club was established in 1944. In USA another organization was formed namely National Irish Red and White Setter Club in year 1984. Firstly Red and White Setters were recognized in 2006 by American Kennel Club.

Temperament

The Irish Red and White Setters are very loyal to its handler and remain obedient. The breed is highly intelligent and high spirited. They are powerful, energetic and well muscled dogs capable of extensive working with long stamina. Indoors, they are very affectionate and loving towards family members and very gentle to children. They are also very kind to other animals in house and extend friendship and mutual working. They remain devoted and greet the peoples entering in the house, even strangers. Therefore, they are not suitable for watchdog responsibilities and should not be trusted for safeguarding of personnel, property and or material. Outdoors, they are highly active, trustworthy and all situation companion of handler, principally they are hunter of small game and animals. They have good sense of smell and can detect the target for hunters like pointing dogs however, they are more vermin catchers. The tracking ability is its distinguished feature. They can track smells till long distances, you can enjoy playing with them by hiding something and send the dog to search it and you will find accurate results.

The breed is active and playful; therefore, need wider space to exercise its activities. The confined space pace like apartments is not suitable for them. At the young age, they may be a little rambunctious, the time is somewhat challenging for its trainer. They could be excessive jumpers; basically they show their happiness and acceptance to strangers in this way. Training with enhanced care would bring harmony in them. The Red and White Setter is devoted family companion and want to work with family members. They are non-aggressive and can be housetrain quite easily. They respond well when you reward on their good learning. With the passage of time you can teach command for stop jumping, stop digging and or stop chewing. The sense of smelling may tempt the dog to escape for investigation of scent, keep in leash or in fenced yard to avoid such wandering mission.

  1. The Irish Red and White Setters are lively breed, they need wider area to ply in. They need regular exercise to stimulate its physical and mental satisfaction.
  2. As the breed is active and need wider area, therefore apartment life is not suggested for them.
  3. The Red and White Setter has a coat of white base color with patches of solid red color, the white is prone to be dirty during activities, therefore, cleaning is recommended.
  4. Smelling sense is at its extreme. They tend to track the scent of suspect miles away.
  5. They welcome strangers and let them enter in house, therefore, they are not good watchdogs.
  6. The coat is silky and dense, with low shedding, minimal brushing, grooming is required.
  7. Seek for good and trustworthy breeders. Ensure puppies are clinically checked and are disease free.
