The Gordon setter is a family loving dog. It is hardworking, trustworthy and caring. Gordon is energetic itself and likes to be the part of the passionate peoples too. It has the energy to hunt throughout the day; this off course needs a regular employment for such activities to make it satisfied of its work. As compared to the other setters, Gordons have possessive and aggressive attitude towards other dogs. Gordon is famous for his family tendency and devotion. Its talents are gundog, pointer, hunter, bird dog, sniffer dog, detective, watchdog and companion.

Heavy structured and solid physical appearance made the Gordon as the heaviest setter. While selection between stamina and speed, it goes with the option of high value of strength rather than speed. Bold structured firm standing this dog walks in a dignified manner with up nicked head and continually moving tail in wave motion. Gordon has substantial skin with polite, soft and shiny hair. Long, straight hairs sometimes a little curly around ears and backs make them a craggy dog that can stand firmly and carryout all day long activities in hard weather conditions as well.

In the beginning of 17th century, Gordon setter was developed in Scotland and achieved popularity by Duke Alexander IV of Gordon in 19the century. These dogs stand unique in sensing smells and were famously used as bird dogs. These dogs were widely used by the hunters of the birds. Fallen birds were immediately located by these alert Gordons. Their power and resilience to bad weather conditions make them an all day long hunter companion, however, Gordon lose its place just because of the speed, as location of falling bird is delayed due to slow speed of this breed. Irish setter is developed from this breed. This Gordon setter achieved recognition in 1884 by the American Kennel Club. Multiple application of Gordon Setter dogs include watchdog, hunting and pointing, tracking and recovering prey and guarding.

Temperament

Gordon setter behaves unfriendly towards new peoples or strangers come into contact until it determines that the strangers are good ones and reliable. Gordon has the ability to survive when encounters new peoples and after its satisfaction and trust, the dog will behave friendly with them otherwise will disregards them completely. It is said that this dog has some rules for making relation of friendship like civilized peoples. Training in the beginning will bring the perfection of socialization in the dog otherwise it will adopt hesitations and bashful to personnel in the community around.

After early planned training, final output in the form of Gordon is achieved in terms of a faithful, affectionate dog behaving devotedly inside the house as well as outside. They are gentle towards children and very tolerable with young kids. They do not react hasty in destructive manner when any sudden change in the environment like odd smells our sounds is observed, so they can be careful guardians for the children. They are intelligent enough to exercise complete control of their duties of guardian indoors or out at field. A wider area is required to exercise its activities including playing, amusement, running and walking, a fenced yard is suitable for them. The breed will become violent when forced kept in confined spaces or kept on-leash all the time, as a result handling of the dog will become demanding.

Gordon Setter has proved to be a passionate companion of other pets around and will safeguard smaller pet in the farmhouse. This feature can further enhanced during puppy-days training by introducing other pets to them so that it can feel the responsibility of them as well. They are able to handle other aggressive breeds of dogs even when operating in the same house. Female dogs are soul source of attraction to Gordon male dogs, so negation to this tendency is needed in the early days. Female dogs are prone to be pregnant and they will adopt defiant attitude while they are hot, the early spay is needed for them to overcome these problems.

Owner Should Know

  1. Gordon Setter needs regular activities to be performed for their exercise, at least two hours daily. Open field is suitable for the activities of running, chasing, fetching balls and other games.
  2. Gordon may react violently if kept without work, satisfaction in mind is mandatory for these dogs to keep the good use of their energies. A planned work as a routine exercise is to be ensured to avoid destructions.
  3. These dogs are family companions and love to remain with families and needs to be noticed. They would not be happy when left alone in house.
  4. Gordon setters usually ignore the strangers and remain tending towards own family, they provide warning upon intruders entering in area, so, they are useful watchdogs.
  5. Gordon Setters will feel unease and will react destructively when force-detached or relations are broken by separation.
  6. Upkeep of health and regular hygienic cleaning of this breed is necessary, especially the skin hairs, the coat is required to be tidy all the time.
  7. Generally Gordon Setters are good with other animals; however, some can be aggressive toward other dogs. Social training in this regards is important from the early days of puppy life.
  8. Although, Gordon Setters are quite indoors, they are not considered good for apartment life. They will be happy in wider areas like fenced fields, house with fenced yards.
  9. Seek for a reputed and experienced breeder or supplier to good healthy, fast growing puppies and ensure the dog is free from any genetic disease that might be passed to other pets. Develop a gentle temperament during initial training and take care of their growth.
