Entlebucher Mountain Dog

Overview

A strong combination of working and herding breed, the Entlebucher Mountain Dogs are enthusiastic partner of their masters in any competitive sports and athletic activities. Primarily, they are herding dog with tireless stamina to work in mountain regions. This is a lively, persistent, self assured, active and steadfast breed. Extremely devoted and loyal, this breed has greater concern towards protection of its family and their belongings. They are extremely gentle with kids, good with other pets if grown together and curious to strangers. They are high-physique and high energy dogs which require above average exercise and activities. The breed is not noisy, average shedder while requires minimal grooming efforts, they need any job to do.

Amongst the four tri-color Swiss Mountain Dogs, the Entlebucher is the smallest one. This breed is medium in size, compact, strong muscled and agile as compared to other three dog breeds which include Appenzeller Sennenhund, Bernese Mountain Dog and Swiss Mountain Dogs. Its coat is short but hard, available in solid black with balanced marking of blaze, muzzle, chest, white and some other shades of colors. The gait is quick, alert and flawless with good reach and drive. The graceful expression is watchful yet keen and elegant.

The ancient herding breed, the Entlebucher was developed to drive cattle in green pastures of Switzerland. This dog is believed to be descended from fighting Masitffs and guard dogs of Roman legions. They become furious in protection of their charge when any wild predator attacks the flock. The natural ability of controlling the herd made them suitable with all large animals like horses and hogs. This breed was originated in Entlebuch valley in the district of Cantons Lucerne and Berne of Switzerland. Once these mountain dogs were near to extinct but were rescued by the efforts of Franz Scheerteneib, while Albert Heim, in 1800s, also played a vital role for searching and reviving mountain dogs. This breed is still found rare outside its native town. Comparatively late, this breed was officially recognized by AKC in 2011 and was placed in the category of herding dog breeds.

Temperament

Basically a cattle driving and herding breed, the Entlebucher Mountain Dog is people oriented breed. They are desirous to be in the center of the family, share their time and house activities while eager to please them. The Entlebucher is a perfect guardian, watchdog and reliable companion of all times. Exceptionally well with older children, they are manage with rough play of young kids as well, while affordable with other dogs and rest of the pets if grown together. Being wary of strangers, they allow the unknown persons only after acceptance by human master.

The puppies tend to dominate other animals including dogs, this is true to its herding instinct but this attitude must not override the human commands. The owner should be ready to control the house as the leader and teach the dog about their status in the order of the pack which is always below the humans. Self sufficiency and independent behaviors sometimes cause them to ignore the commands, this issue is more periodic in early age but with the committed and consistent socialization training the breed has proven extremely submissive and tenacious.

This energetic breed has an outdoor lifestyle and needs healthy amount of physical exertion. Some of its exercise requirements can be met while on its job of driving cattle and herding, however, a family based dog would require your company in long walks. They can be good playmate in outfields as well as in yard; they can be accompanied while jogging and running. Remember an unsatisfied dog would be restless in nature and may tend to destructive. To keep the tranquility and peace in the house environment, keep them physically and mentally satisfied for their stimulation. The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is not suitable for apartment life for being active and lively. They would feel better in a house with yard to share activities of indoor and outdoor.
