English Coonhound


The English Coonhound is a descendent of English Foxhound but with stronger hunting abilities. With remarkable speed, stamina and strength, this breed is an ideal hunter companion. Being vocal this breed is tough rather annoying to neighbor due to their loud bark. The American English Coonhound is a perfect athlete and versatile hunter. They hunt foxes in day time and raccoons at night. The breed is trainable with polite and confident handling while sociable with other pets at home including dogs. They are good with children as well. The breed is alert, intelligent, pleasant, confident and high-willed. Their trait of independency and self-sufficiency sometimes cause them to be slightly stubborn. The dog is high energetic, lively and active thus demands healthy amount of exercise daily for their physical and mental stimulation.

This zealous and passionate hunting dog is healthy, highly energetic and capable for chase and attack. The build is longer in length than in height with strong muscles. This large size dog is suitably filled with flesh and bones. The expressively huge stamina is reflected by its sharp and effortless gait. It’s dense but medium in length coat is hard and resistive which is the natural protection against environmental and climatic severity. The dog is usually available in combination of white and other colors including red and black. It may be tri-color and in other possible shades.

The English coonhounds possibly share ancestry with English Foxhounds. The English Coonhound was registered by UKC in 1905 for the first time. Around the turning of century all coonhounds were commonly categorized particularly English Foxhounds, American Foxhounds, Treeing Walker Coonhounds and Bluetick Coonhounds. The Redbone and Black and Tan Coonhounds were however categorized in different breeds. This breed achieved a separate breed status in 1945-46 when English and Bluetick Coonhounds were distinguished amongst them. The American English Coonhounds were developed for rough terrains and used for hunting foxes during day time and raccoons by night. Once it was known as Virginia hounds, this dog was named after its dual capability of hunting as English foxhound and Coonhounds. The AKC recognized this breed in 2011.


The American English Coonhound is a sharp hunter, vigorous athlete and extraordinary runner. They hunt in the form of packs with remarkable coordination. They get along very well with other pets including dogs if raised together. Although lovesome, they are advisable for families with older children who know the dealing of high energy dogs. They have low tolerance to rough and rowdy play by young toddlers thus supervision of young kids is mandatory. This is self-assured, watchful, enthusiastic, courageous and well devoted breed. They stay high-steamed, extravagant and lively. They are reserved with strangers. This Coonhound excels in scent detection, trailing and speedy chase. A responsive guardian of the family, this dog is also an energetic playmate, shares play sessions in yard with children eagerly.

The dog is easy to train but demands a well experienced and confident handler. As a common rule, socialize the dog from its puppyhood; keep training session short and interactive. Its ignorant trait that sometimes makes them hard to engage in training activities should be treated with positive reinforcement. Rewards on their achievements are good motive force that brings positive response from them. They do not appreciate harsh handling.

  1. The breed is less demanding in terms of grooming efforts, brushing of its medium coat once in a week is quite satisfactory. This dog is an average shedder, still easy to live with.
  2. This dog is temperature sensitive, prone to overheat during hot summers of southern USA.
  3. The English Coonhounds are free of dog odor.
  4. This hunter is easily lured by prey scent for trail and chase. Not recommended for apartment life for their loud voice, they are best kept in a house having a fenced yard.
  5. The English Coonhound breed of dog is considered very healthy with an active lifestyle, however prone to some common health issues including hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and ear infections. This breed needs special care during puppyhood but an adult is less likely to suffer such health issues. Veterinary experts should be consulted periodically for better upkeep and healthy pet at home.
  6. It possesses enormous energy which demands activities rather idle sleeping curled for the day long. Being lively, the American English Coonhounds require extensive physical exertion. Their peak energy requires satisfaction for a calm state of mind. Exercise them daily to bring gratification and stimulation of physical and mental organs.
  7. Remember, unsatisfied dog would become destructive and would build behavioral issues like excessive barking, digging, chewing, it may get unsafe around children as well. This dog is the best companion during running and jogging, walk would be a little brisk; they also love to participate in warming up games.
