Overview

Cesky Terriers are independent, stubborn, boisterous and rambunctious breed, the dog that needs early and continuous socialization for the whole life because of their aggression towards strangers. Alike other terrier breeds, this dog is active and lively, eager to dig and dominate other pets. They are affordable with other pets if grown together. This playful and joyous breed behaves gently with family children but need supervision with young toddlers. Ceskys require moderate exercises while need average grooming efforts. They chase small rodents.

The only working terrier developed to work in packs, the Cesky Terrier is a short legged, well pigmented and well muscled dog. The dog projects a rectangular shape being longer in length than in height. The gait is free, driven and enduring with gallop rather slow. The forelegs extend in a straight line forward. The dog has ears dropped down naturally, sharp and sleek tail besides long and silky coat which is impressively soft. The dog is available in varying shades of grey to charcoal and platinum colors.

The Cesky Terriers were originated in the Czech Republic and holds the status of national dog. Mr. Frantisik Horak, a well known breeder of Scottish Terriers is credited for the development of Cesky Terriers. After multiple crosses of Scottish and Sealyham Terriers, the first batch was introduced in 1949. The breed data was provided to Czech Terrier Club (FCI) in 1950 for registration where the dog was named Cesky (Chess-key) terrier, however the breed was distinguishingly registered in 1963. In Czech Republic, this breed is well documented as the pictorial of the dog are being widely used in postage stamps, television and movies besides mentioned in literature books. In 1987 the breed made its maiden way to United States, the dog is found rare as very less number is registered with UKC and FCI. Cesky Terriers are the hunter of foxes, rabbits, ducks, wild boars and pheasants.

Temperament

The Cesky Terrier is an active, playful, lively, cheerful and pleasant dog. They are small but energetic while brave, fearless and sharp hunter of foxes and rodents. The dog is believed to be composed of aggression for strangers. They stay curious, investigative and protective while sensitive to surroundings for odd smell, sounds and other phenomenon. They initiate barking to alarm the owner for any suspected element. The dog is affordable with older children who know the handling while young toddler should be governed. They can stay calm with other pets if all of them are grown together.

The breed is quite challenging in socialization training. Usually this breed needs continuous socialization, however the familiarization should commence from its very early age. Let them meet and build cooperative attitudes with unfamiliar pets, peoples and places. Keep them introduced with society, accompany them in picnic trips, markets and parks but never trust off leash. Lead the dog in true spirit to realize them that human is always above the dog in order of the pack.

To retain harmony and peace in the house, keep the dog satisfied with physical exertion. The exercise requirement can be met with vigorous play sessions in yard besides long walks, and running. The breed is excellent companion of traveling and lively playmate of children. Accompany them in exercise activities, hold leash in hand and walk ahead of the dog. Cesky Terriers require handsome amount of grooming efforts. Its long hairs require regular combing to avoid matting and removal dead hairs and debris while clipping is suggested once in a month. The dog is suitable for apartment as well as open houses but should be supervised when off leash.

Owner Should Know

  1. The Cesky Terriers are generally healthy yet prone to Scottie Cramp Syndrome, which causes awkward movement during walks.
  2. The dog can adjust with or without yard, suitable for apartment life yet demands early socialization. Introduce with all pets from their puppyhood.
  3. Introduce with strange peoples to bring aggression down, however watchdog tendency should not be suppressed.
  4. Accompany them on long walks, plan fetching games in yard and share picnics, trips and travel with them. A minimum of 30 minutes exertion is mandatory for their physical and mental stimulation.
  5. Grooming requirement is healthy and time demanding. Although its silky coat is easy in clipping, however, one may need experts to upkeep its hairs. Regular brushing and combing is fruitful to avoid matting of coat and removal of dead hairs.
  6. The breed is hypoallergenic, they are good for peoples having dog allergies.
  7. Seek for reputed and trustworthy breeders or suppliers to get healthy puppies, ensure puppies are clinically checked and are disease free.
