The Central Asian Ovtcharka dog is also called Central Asian Shepherd Dog, an intelligent, calm, daring and fearless breed. Livestock guardian by instinct, this breed is strong protective, a personal and property guard besides exceptional working dog. Well socialized, they generally divide their duties to address the issues. This is an assertive breed and will not step back against any challenge. Curious to strangers while aggressive to other dogs, the Central Asian Shepherd Dog is perfect guard and watchdog. The dog is affectionate and gentle with kids; however they should be supervised with young toddlers. They need early socialization to keep as house pet; they may be slightly tough in housetraining. Introduce the dog with new peoples, pets, places and friends at an early age. They are not suited to first time dog owners.

The Central Asian Shepherd dog is rugged, sturdy and strong, well proportioned for right strength and stamina. Build is slightly longer in length than in height with wider chest. Its limbs are well muscled, flexible while back is strong, its jowls hang down a little and head is broad at the top reducing to narrow till muzzle. Gait is free, flowing with good reach and drive. It coat is very dense and comes in both long and short varieties. Both of these varieties have heavy undercoat that helps him in affording hard weather conditions. The breed holds Mastiff type expressions due to its fur. Its tail is sometimes docked, ears are cropped to form cauliflower shape, however some countries like France and Australia ban such activities.

The Central Asian Ovtcharka or Shepherd dog is an ancient breed that dates 4,000 years back. The believed origin of this breed is Russia. It has many talents including personal and property guard, livestock guardian and fighting dog. This is the prominent national and traditional fighting dog of many countries. This purebred breed was near to extinct when Russian army recruited many guard dogs for general working purposes. These pure dogs were widely held with villagers and farmers on their farmhouses to guard the properties and flock. Due to their agile applications, their breed characteristics vary with dog to dog, they lack in breed standard as well. This breed has some very interesting anatomy specifications including false ribs, flexible joints, substantial neck and distinguished head setting. The breed is registered with FCI, while included in Foundation Stock Services (FSS) by AKC.


The Central Asian Shepherd Dog is a loving, caring, affectionate and loyal breed of dog when indoors. They enjoy sharing of time with family, they welcome friends, eager to please and wants to stay touched. They are exceptionally well with elder children and small non-canine pet at home, they need supervision while with young toddlers due to their massive size. They are strongly curious to strangers while aggressive to unknown dogs.

The Central Asian Shepherd breed is not for new dog owners. They tend to behave boisterously and aggressively during puppyhood and would create challenges with other house pets. Early day’s socialization is mandatory which is possible with firm, patient, consistent and committed training. This breed is highly independent and intelligent to decide its own decisions. Its guarding training is easy as it is naturally protective however obedience training is much demanding. The owner should exercise authority of alpha dog with leadership skills. Make sure your dog is aware of the leader and know its own position in the pack order. The dogs are always below the human beings in the natural pack order.

The breed holds high energies, thus requires healthy amount of exercise daily to stay satisfied. Remember an unsatisfied dog would be too rambunctious and would be destructive in the house with excessive barking, digging and chewing. The breed is escape artist and would avail every opportunity available. This breed is easy to keep groomed with low maintenance efforts; however their dense coat sheds a lot during spring. Brushing of its coat is easy but should be done regularly during shedding season and in rest of the year on every alternate day.

  1. The Central Asian Shepherd dog is escape artist, it can dig, jump and run vigorously, at least 6 feet high fence is recommended for this breed.
  2. Although affectionate and caring to children, yet supervision is needed when around young toddlers. Its massive size may unintentionally harm the kids.
  3. The perfect guard, this breed is much suited to the families seeking for a guardian or watchdog.
  4. This breed is not suitable for new dog owners or weak handlers.
  5. Its size is large, thus large facilities would be required like wide yard, larger bedding, more food and care etc.
  6. Seemingly lazy demeanor but active actually. This breed require healthy amount of exercise daily.
  7. This breed is high sensitive in sound sensing and can detect a pin drop noise.
