This breed is named after its area of origin that is Catahoula, of northern Louisiana. The development history of this breed is not certain due to lack of documented record. The dog is believed to be a cross between various Mastiffs, Bloodhounds, Greyhounds brought by Spanish settlers with Native American Indian dogs during 16th century. At that time the forests were full of packs of wild hogs and cattle. The Catahoula Leopard Dogs were able to herd these packs in an organized manner by surrounding them into a circle till the human master arrive. Their actual power was their unity, as they attack in the form of group usually of three members at least; otherwise they were easy target for a single pig if facing one by one. This breed had also accompanied the hunters in treeing the raccoons but the most favorite application for them was to herd and drive large animals including hogs and wild cattle. This dog has the honor of being State dog of Louisiana in 1979.

Temperament

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is an independent, intelligent, territorial and protective. They establish strong bonding with family, stay touched with people who love them, affectionate to children and well behaved with other pets. Quite reserved with strangers, they hold inquisitive rather suspicious trait to unknown persons and strange dogs. They are not satisfied with just barking to intruders yet dare to mess if challenged. They tend to welcome known family friends; usually they smell the person being introduced to them for their positive recognition in future.

Being strong territorial and independent, they need early socialization for housebreak. They would be cooperative and harmonious with other animals at home if all of the pets are grown together. Introduce them with new peoples, pets, places and surrounding society on very early age. This breed is dominating and would need strong owner with perfect leadership qualities. It is important for owner that he should enforce natural order of the pack in which dog is always below the human beings. Always be polite, firm, confident and gentle while training, they do not respond well to harsh training methods.
