Briquet Griffon Vendeen

Overview

Briquet Griffon Vendeen are high-sensitive, fine-nosed, fast and sharp hunting dog marked by excellent scent detection and trailing abilities. Excel over all type of hard, rough and tough terrain; they are very nimble, self-assured and daring breed. They are better in sensing the scent in the wind rather on ground trail. The dogs from this breed are robust, showing a great deal of initiative and possess lasting stamina. The enthusiastic hunter, Briquet Griffon Vendeen is better handled by firm, committed and consistent owner able to demonstrate true leadership. Affordable with other pets, this breed is excellent with children and a well praised family companion.

This determined hunter, Briquet Griffon Vendeen is a medium-sized, strong, stocky and well proportioned breed of dog. The build is fairly light, skull and muzzle are in line while slightly arched but short skull that is not too broad. The ears are low set and droopy but not very large. Its coat is wiry, coarse but dense, a natural protection from environmental severity and affordability in waters. Its gait is slightly quick, alert and easy with good reach and drive. The overall expressions are keen, lovely and attractive. This breed is gaining popularity quite sharply.

This breed originated in France as a hunting dog, especially for hare and other small animals. The word Briquiet means a “medium-sized", this breed of dog was developed and controlled by Count of Elva before World War I. This dog was resulted in an effort of reducing the Grand Griffon Vendeen in size to get, a compact, smaller and improved variety. Alike other dog breeds, this breed too, suffered a great extinction during both World Wars but survived by enthusiastic breeders through extensive breed protection programs throughout the world. Their number grew to an adequate number till 1946 while having a large stock today. This breed won French cup for roe deer hunting in 1995. They have hunted the wild boar as well. Apart from adequate numbers, this breed is rare even in its own country of origin. Recognized neither by AKC nor UKC but registered with FCI, this breed is gaining popularity in America due to its companionship and appealing appearance.

Temperament

The Briquet Griffon Vendeen is an intense and bold hunting dog, an agile athlete and passionate companion. The pack of strength and stamina, this dog is buoyant, entertaining, playful yet high independent, well suited with older children but should not be trusted without supervision around young toddlers. They get along very well with other pets including other dogs and non-canine animals when all of them are raised together. This dependable breed is devoted and hardworking

Its training would be challenging because of its own mind to think and decide. Weak owners or first time dog owners are not advised for this breed. They would be highly stubborn against tough and harsh training, while ignorant to owner’s commands. Socialization can effectively be achieved by an experienced owner, a demonstrative pack leader. Once the dog is aware of pack leader, it would accept dominance and would become responsive, yet a great degree of patience is to be exercised besides consistency in socialization training. The breed is not suitable for apartment livings, its outdoor life style matches with countryside life and will excel in open farmhouses. Their exercise requirements are also high enough. This breed would be too rambunctious if not satisfied with their physical work. A tired dog instead is the best dog in the house. Accompany them on long walks, jogs, hikes and running besides sharing vigorous play sessions in the yard.

The breed is prone to get matting and tangling, regular combing of its coat is necessary. Its skin is preserved with natural oil that would be dried if bathed frequently. These dogs should only be bathed when extremely required. Being rare and less studies, their health issues are not well known yet patella luxation and distichiasis are some common reported issues to this breed.
