Small but sturdy, Bichon Frise is a cheerful and felicitous dog, naturally gentle, co-operative and playful dog, it loves positive activities rather wandering or idle in yard. Minimal or non-shedder, this breed needs clipping and trimming periodically for better grooming. Additionally, Bichons are hypoallergenic, thus suits to all personnel having dog allergies. This small dog heights one foot or less, yet not classified as toy breed. Rarely stubborn but intelligent and independent, sometimes tend to decide their own, willing to learn but challenging for handler, being small, they need extensive care while handling and playing with young toddlers.

The Plumed tail over back is carried with an inquisitive expression. The dog is soft sensational over back due to its curled soft and silky double coat, generally available in pure white, off-white, cream-white or apricot shads. Elegant and dignified gait further augments its graceful expression.

The Bichon Frise dogs are said to be descended from Water Spaniels and Standard Poodles in 13th century back. The name Bichon is derived from French word meaning a small long-haired dog. This breed was famous with reference of Spanish sailors, who travelled across the world while accompanying this dog. Bichons achieved popularity among French nobilities during 16th century. In its early mature history, they were used as circus dogs, however current application is a companion dog. Current Bichon Frise is neither a retriever nor a water dog but still enjoys water sports and objects recovery from water, this trait is linked with its ancestors those were used by sailors to get assistance in sea life. Central Society of Canine (National Kennel Club of France) firstly established the standards for this breed in 1933. This dog embraced popularity in USA during 1955 and in Australia during 1960s. Bichon Frise breed was recognized by AKC in 1973 as non sporting dog breed.

Temperament

Bichon Frises are agreed of cheerful family pet and companionable dogs. Sensitive and caring, this breed is appreciated as gentle tempered and affectionate house mate. Keen in human interactions, they love to be involved in family matters, affordable with young children yet sociable with dogs and cats at home, they retain harmony and peace in home environment. Greeting strangers and making quick friends are yet another favored attitude, although not suited as watchdog, still possessive about family and its concerns.

Its intelligence sometimes influences them to decide their own. Although, Bichon do not develop an ignorant temperament, still need tough defined training with strict rules and routines to follow. They would get along very well with canine pets and some rodents as well, but early socialization and housebreak is mandatory. They are not barkers but independent, only offer a play yard to them, they would manage their exercises and activities their own. They respond reward based training very well, and are easy to live with. Handsome amount of walk or playful activities of yard are felt essential to maintain dog’s physical health.

The dog is small but can dominate if you let him to do so. They thrive when in family, would suffer separation anxiety if left alone for considerable long times, you would notice behavioral changes including barking, digging, sometimes snapping, rarely biting. Originally these are not the traits but a response of unaccepted handling; otherwise the breed is well mannered, stable-minded and devoted.

Owner Should Know

  1. Bichons offer some challenges in socialization training, an experienced owner would get along well, but new owner will face difficulties, some can go for Crate training.
  2. They thrive when in family, they are keen in human interactions, off-course, would suffer separation anxiety when left alone for long time, they may involve in digging and barking in response.
  3. Puppyhood is important; the dog is rather agile and needs careful handling. Young children should not be allowed to handle Bichon puppies to avoid any damage.
  4. This breed is non-shedder, but fluffy, they need extensive trimming and clipping especially face, nose and eyes surroundings. You need to invest in time or money to hire experts.
  5. Be watchful during training, do not let your dog to develop small dog syndrome, neither let him develop fearful, shy or timid behavior.
  6. Seek for reputed and trustworthy breeders to get healthy puppy, ensure puppies are clinically checked and are disease free.
