Large and hard, the Bernese Mountain Dog is the name of a strong, sturdy and powerful dog developed as working dog. Famous as Berner Sennunhund, the Bernese Mountain dog is one of the four Sennunhund breed from mountains of Switzerland. A portrait of Bernese-like dog is the part of history of 18th century’s rural life which was possibly painted by local artists. The dog had accompanied the herders and dairymen as the farm dog. Some had been used as draft dogs, pulling carts etc. This breed is named after a region ‘Bern’ of Switzerland. The development of this breed was officially commenced in 1907 and was finally distinguished by American Kennel Club during 1937 as general working dog group.
Bernese Mountain Dogs are calm, gentle and well mannered dog, affectionate to children and other familiar pets. Eager to be tasked for carting, pulling jobs, these dogs also enjoy family life playfully and joyously. They have an excellent record of carting contest, one of the famous parades is Conway, New Hampshire holiday parade, Bernese has embraced many titles including Advance Novice Draft Dog and Master Draft Dog. Many Bernese Local clubs offer training for such competitions.
The intelligent trait has introduced some dominant characteristics but are rarely practiced, further self confidence makes them a little stubborn and demanding in housetrain. Socialization in terms of working dog would make it mild and calm tempered much suited to work in markets, this training further develops good manners while interaction with strange peoples. At markets or on work, they are either aloof or friendly to strangers but are curious rather investigating while at watchdog duty. Usually they are very quiet, but would bark only to warn about any threat to an adequate level. They would go along well with pet animals which are grown together otherwise tend to aggressive especially dogs and cats.
Dominance over dog is necessary, handler or trainer should possess patience and commitment. Reward based training has proved fruitful. As a working dog, they need healthy food, thus require healthy exercises, keep walking with and introduce activities to warm up their blood for stimulation of mental and physical organs. Additionally introduction of all possible pets during puppyhood would bring harmony and peace in house environment.
Owner Should Know
As a draft dog, this energy pack needs a moderate but regular exercise, accompany them in walks or plan activities to suit its capacities.
Their dense, course and medium coat sheds heavily, brushing twice a week would bring good grooming.
The Bernese dogs are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat cancer and mast cell tumors. Keep visiting veterinary experts during puppyhood to avoid any suspected disease.
They tend to eat more, overfed would result in clumsy and overweight dog.
Always govern food intake and force balance diet.
Apartment life is not suggested for them, the domain of their activities lies outdoors.
They do well in cold weathers but hot summer is difficult for them.
